You must first make a contact transaction (i.e. CHIP and PIN) before you will be able to tap your card to make contactless payments. This is a security feature that prevents someone from fraudulently using your card while it is on its way to you.
You can do a maximum of 5 consecutive Contactless transactions, when you reach this limit you will need to use chip and pin to reset the counter.
