If you swapped upfront to one of our 32 "wallet currencies" and a merchant or an ATM asks if you’d like to use the local currency or not, always opt for the local currency.
If you don't, the merchant will use a service known as Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) whereby the retailer converts your payment back into your other available currency at an exchange rate of their choosing. We always advise, if the ATM is asking you to accept an exchange rate or conversion query, to select "No". The rate is usually bad and allows them to levy you with an extra charge.
As you’ve already taken advantage of WeSwap’s great rates there’s no need for you to suffer these charges.
What if I have money in my GBP wallet and another wallet? How will the card know which wallet to take from?
Your WeSwap card is smart - it will first check whether you have enough of the right currency in your wallets, before using the balance you have available in other currency wallets.
So, if you’re in America and you have enough dollars in your USD wallet to cover the transaction, then that is where the money will be taken from.
If you don’t have enough USD in your wallet, then it will use your favourite/primary wallet balance.
If you don't have enough funds for the transaction amount in your favourite/primary wallet, then it will check the other currency wallets and if there is a sufficient balance you will be charged in any of those.
What is my favourite/primary wallet and how do I set it up?
By default your favourite/primary wallet is set up in GBP, however you can change this by:
- Click on the wallet icon on the top-right of the screen, you will see the list of your available currencies wallets (check here how to add a wallet)
- Tap on the currency wallet you want to set as favourite/primary - click on Set as primary
You can only have one favourite/primary wallet.
Can I combine money from wallets to cover one transaction?
This is not possible. One transaction cannot combine currency from two different wallets. If you don’t have enough money to cover the whole transaction in one wallet, then that transaction will fail.
What will my activities look like?
Exactly the same. When you spend in one of our non-wallet countries, the money will be deducted in your favourite/primary wallet or in another currency wallet where you had the funds available for that transaction. The fee will be also be displayed separately.
Can I make purchases in the non-wallet currencies online?
Yes, you can.
